Spotify Canvas is a short visual loop attached to a track. It is separate from a full-length music video. Prepare the loop for Canvas’s own specifications, then check that your artist role can upload it.
The technical table below follows Spotify’s Canvas guidelines, checked on October 7, 2026. Pay attention to pixel height. A familiar social-video preset is not proof of compliance.
What are the current Spotify Canvas requirements?
Use the official page as the final specification reference. Its wording says pixels tall, not pixels wide. A 1080 × 1920 social export exceeds that listed height range. The label “vertical” alone does not establish compliance.
| Property | Spotify’s published guidance | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Motion duration | 3–8 seconds | Actual file duration, including any ending frame |
| Shape | 9:16 vertical | Width-to-height ratio of the file |
| Height | 720–1080 pixels tall | The height field, not the width field |
| File type | MP4 or JPG | Actual format, not only the filename |
Inspect the properties of the file you submit. A still JPG has no moving sequence to time. Keep the approved source separate from each delivery export.
Spotify warns that even a slight size or length mismatch can cause an upload failure. Its Canvas error guide recommends checking the file and offers the mobile app as another upload route.
Keep the original artwork and edit project. If the form rejects a file, change a copy rather than destroying your highest-quality source.
Who can add a Canvas to a song?
Spotify’s access page lists eligible main-artist relationships and requires an Admin or Editor role. It allows Canvas on upcoming tracks as well as released tracks. The Canvas upload instructions describe the current eligibility and navigation.
Check access before you hire someone to deliver the loop. The artist name on a track and the role on an artist team are separate facts. A collaborator with permission to design an asset does not automatically have account access to publish it.
Name the person who will upload the approved file. Send that person the final export, track identity, and approval record. Avoid handing over account passwords to solve a file-delivery problem.
If several artists share a release, agree on the visual before upload. Use the same approval record for later replacements. That keeps collaborators informed about changes to the live track.
How do you design a loop that works with the song?
Build one short visual idea. An image can shift, a light can move, or an object can turn. The loop does not need to summarize a whole music video.
Keep the main subject inside the frame rather than relying on an edge detail. Preview the transition from the last frame to the first. Watch several repetitions. A jump that looks deliberate once can feel distracting after a minute.
Spotify recommends avoiding rapid cuts, intense flashes, and singing footage that cannot stay synchronized with the song. Its creative Canvas guidance explains why a short loop needs a different approach from a lyric sequence.
As an editorial practice, compare a still version with the moving version. If the motion makes the artwork harder to understand, reduce it. If you use cover art from another creator, agree on the animation and crop before delivery.
Is a Canvas the same as a Spotify music video?
No. Canvas is an attached loop. Full-length video uses another delivery path and another set of eligibility rules.
Spotify introduced direct full-length uploads in a limited beta on June 17, 2026. Its announcement lists official videos, performances, sessions, and covers. It excludes lyric videos and visualizers at launch. Spotify’s beta announcement describes that scope.
The current upload guide says direct access remains in beta. Labels and distributors continue as the main delivery route for audio and music videos. Spotify’s video-upload guide provides the account requirements and current delivery specifications.
Check the route available to your artist team before commissioning a full video for Spotify. Canvas access does not prove full-video access. A successful upload to another service does not prove Spotify will accept the same format or content type.
What should you do when a Canvas upload fails?
Start with the file properties. Compare duration, ratio, height, and format against the current official page. Do not rely on a template name or a screenshot of the export dialog.
Then check the account and selected track. A correct file cannot solve a missing role. Write down the exact error before changing anything. This separates an access question from an encoding question.
If the published guidance and the actual form disagree, save both details for support. Avoid repeated random conversions. Every conversion creates another file to identify and can change the picture.
After a successful upload, inspect the track in the listener app where the feature is available. Judge the loop with the surrounding interface visible. Keep the accepted file as a named delivery version.
Impact on users
Treating Canvas as its own deliverable saves artists from buying the wrong asset. It also gives an animator or designer a clear job: one approved loop with known technical and creative boundaries.
A complete handoff includes the artwork permission, editable source, accepted export, and chosen track. Full-length video can be a later decision based on access and artistic purpose. It does not need to be folded into a small Canvas assignment.
